Snowmobile Hill Climb

Posted on: March 4th, 2013 by thcAdmin No Comments

March 21-24, 2013

The World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb is held each March on Snow King Mountain. The race is put on by the Jackson Hole Snow Devils, a local snowmobiling organization. This event fills the town and attracts over 10,000 spectators throughout the course of the weekend. The race course rises nearly straight up from the base of Snow King. It is simply amazing that riders are able to pilot these machines up such a steep pitch.

It was not until the early 90’s that many sleds even had a chance of summiting the challenging course. With the advent of new technologies, since the mid nineties, it is truly a race versus a high point competition.

The Octane Addictions Freestyle Demo is a snowmobile jumping event at the Teton County Fairgrounds rodeo arean. Tickets are $20.

This event is sure to provide some high speed thrills and spills! The central viewing area and that corner of town in general tend to be pretty lively. If you have never seen something like this before, make some time to take in the hill climb. The racing heats up over the weekend with qualifying Saturday and the finals, “King of the Mountain,” on Sunday. Racing starts up early at 8am and generally lasts until 5p.m. or so. Schedule of Events.

Take the chairlift to the summit and back down to see the race from an entirely unique perspective. The views of the valley from the chairlift on a clear day are pretty spectacular as well. Should choose to walk down along the course, be prepared for a steep and potentially thrilling descent.

Book your lodging early as the town tends to get pretty full over the hill climb weekend. With the event being held in town, many properties are with walking distance of the hill climb. Utilize the S.T.A.R.T. bus to get around town. Don’t drink and drive, there tends to be a heavy police presence around the valley for this event.

St. Patrick’s Day

Come out and share in some Irish cuisine and revelry. Spend some time during the day exploring the valley, then hit the town. The largest celebration is most likely happening at the Snake River Brewery. A number of local establishments have food and drink specials running throughout the day. Throw on a little green, hope to see you out there.

Dick’s Ditch Banked Slalom

Posted on: February 22nd, 2013 by thcAdmin No Comments

Skier competition March 1-3 and Snowboarder competition March 8-10, 2013

***changes to the 2013 format***

The Dick’s Ditch event will span two weekends this year. The first weekend, March 1-3, will feature skiers. The following weekend, March 8-10,will feature snowboarders. The format for both race weekends will hold qualifiers on Saturday and “winner-takes-all” on Sundays.

Dick’s Ditch Classic utilizes a natural ditch which winds its way down most of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The race event utilizes the ravine which runs through the middle portion of the mountain. “This “big mountain ditch” has huge banked walls with steep pitches and opportunities for plenty of air. The course’s natural terrain is “enhanced” with some manmade features providing an amazing venue for this ski and snowboard race. The event format is that of a banked slalom. This race course changes a bit each year and is like nothing you’ve seen before.
This is a wild event which is sure to feature a few spills and some wild riding. Rollers, gaps, bumps and jumps are just a few of the manmade features that keep racers on edge.

Competition heats up over the weekend as racers become familiar with the course and conditions. There is prize money and awards up for grabs. This event attracts many of the area’s best all-around riders. Many of the top local riders look forward to this event each year as competition continually heats up.

As the event has matured over the years  the course has become more exciting and refined. Doing some laps off of the Marmot Chair can provide some good viewing opportunities from the chair and along the course. Be sure to take in some of the action over the two weekends if you are out at the village.

High and Dry

Posted on: January 13th, 2013 by thcAdmin No Comments

When the valley experiences an extended period of cold and dry weather take advantage of the clear weather. Many visitors to the valley during the Winter months never even see the Tetons. The mountains become enshrouded by clouds as storm systems pass through the area, obscuring the magnificent Teton Range from view.

Another interesting phenomena often occurs, a temperature inversion. The cold air sinks into the valley and the heat quickly rises into the upper atmosphere creating warmer temperatures at higher elevations. When this happens get off of the valley floor and explore the upper reaches. Snowshoe and nordic skiing tours in the Teton Pass area are good options. Beautiful vistas can be obtained. Yellowstone National Park is ripe for exploring. Yellowstone’s average base elevation in above 8000′ above sea, during storms many visitors never get to experience the vast open spaces that exist within the park. Dogsledding is always a fun way to get out on the snow.

Wildlife tours should also be considered during periods of clear weather. With increased viewing distances, one is more apt to stumble upon wildlife. Spotting scopes and binoculars are highly recommended if going out on your own. Organized tours generally provide spotting scopes and/or binoculars.

The Handle Bar

Posted on: December 24th, 2012 by thcAdmin No Comments

The Handle Bar at the Four Season Resort is now open. A guest appearance last night by Jim Belushi turned into a lively performance celebrating the opening of Jackson’s newest watering hole. During the set, his daughter joined in on a few songs for the crowd as well. Everybody enjoyed the evening and service seemed to be well on top of things.

Stop by and enjoy some food and drinks after a hard day on the slopes. The new space is pretty much wide open and feels quite spacious with its high ceilings. The main bar looks directly out onto the slopes and has a great feel. Adjacent to the bar is a slightly elevated dining area. The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort base area is right out the door. There are large dining tables located in the central area and booths along the far wall, creating a beer hall type of ambiance.

Another Storm

Posted on: December 18th, 2012 by thcAdmin No Comments

December 18, 2012

Another storm has blanketed the Tetons. The upper mountain continues to provide outstanding ski conditions. It is still a littler thin down low, but continued snowmaking efforts have opened up additional trails.

The season was off to a slow start but Mother Nature has recently been kind to the Tetons. Lets hope December keeps the snow coming down and fills the rest of the mountain in. We will certainly need more terrain to keep the Holiday crowds occupied.

Grand Targhee has been receiving ample snowfall with each passing storm as well. Their higher base elevation lends to slightly deeper base depths and a greater percentage of total terrain open.

Snow King’s opening efforts continue to be hampered by warmer valley temperatures and little snowfall at lower elevations.

The Christmas Survival Kit

Bring the family out to the Jackson Hole Playhouse for a littler dinner theater, or just take in the show. Always a holiday treat the playhouse hosts a limited run each holiday season.

Its On!

Meet the new, and highly anticipated, Casper High Speed Detachable Quad.

Jackson Hole snow conditions have continued to improve.  It looks like the snow gods are finally giving Jackson a little love. The Bridger Gondola, Marmot chair, and the new Casper chair are now open. The additional acreage has given folks some space to spread out and take advantage of the new snow. The coverage is pretty good for this time of year and the snow is in great condition. As of this morning the mountain reported 5″ in the last 24 hours with potential for more.

The new Casper chair combined with the trail grooming and terrain enhancements have beefed up this mid-mountain playground. The new chair is a high speed detachable quad providing quick and comfortable access to a large portion of Jackson Hole’s intermediate terrain.

The upper mountain at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort(JHMR) is due to open over the weekend including the Tram. The upper portions of the mountain have seen a slow but steady trickle of snow over the past few days. Winds combined with the new snow continue to buff things out. The snow is still thin on the lower slopes, so be aware, ongoing snow making efforts have covered egress routes. It will still be a bit until the Hobacks and Lower Faces are ready to go.

Grand Targhee will be opening additional terrain over the weekend as well. Their high base elevation, at 8000′, lends itself to exceptional coverage throughout the season. If you are visiting the area be sure to take advantage of the Targhee Express and see what Targhee is all about.

It is my understudying that Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort are currently offering some of the best conditions out there. Come experience the Tetons and all they have to offer, there’s plenty of action off slope.

Snow King resort continues to make snow as temperatures allow and unfortunately will be postponing their opening which had been planned for this weekend. The way things are shaping up, they should have their chairs spinning sooner than later.

Yellowstone Winter Season

Posted on: December 2nd, 2012 by thcAdmin No Comments

Yellowstone National Park is due to open for the 2012/2013 on December 15. The park service has determined that 318 commercially guided “Best Available Technology” snowmobiles and 78 commercially guided snowcoaches will be allowed access to the park on a daily basis. The Winter season will close to over snow travel on March 15, 2013.

Experiencing the park during the Winter months provides a thrilling adventure.

Del Mel Jamaican Restaurant

Posted on: November 30th, 2012 by thcAdmin No Comments

When visiting the Naples Florida area in late October 2012, I ran across Del-Mel Jamaican Restaurant. When traveling, I always look for the “authentico” food experience. Sometimes it takes a little research and asking around, other times you just get lucky and stumble upon a truly great dining experience. The Sweet Tea is absolutely delicious.

The food is amazing and definitely made with Love. The proprietor, Pauline, takes care in creating authentic Jamaican/Caribbean dishes. Her restaurant space is quite possibly the cleanest place on the planet. In my 10 or so days in the area, I ate there 3 times. After discovering the place, I brought along some friends and family, all were impressed with the quality of the food.

Pauline’s jerk sauce is incredible, it is served on the side so that you can monitor your spice intake. The lunch specials are well portioned and well balanced meals for a moderate price. The food is all very healthy. From the dinner menu the Jerk Baby Back Ribs are my go to meal of choice, the Curry Goat is also right up there. All meals are served with rice & peas, steamed cabbage, and fried plantain. The menu tops out around $18. With so many restaurants in the Naples area, its hard to find the good ones, put Del-Mel on top of your hit list.

The space is quaint and has an “island feel.” If it is not too busy, Pauline can provide some delightful conversation. Carryout seems to do a brisk business for her, so do not hesitate to call ahead if you will be passing by. Located at the intersection of US 41 Tamiami Trail and Rattlesnake Hammock road, facing US 41.

Is Winter 2012/2013 Upon Us?

Posted on: November 27th, 2012 by thcAdmin No Comments

11-28-12

The Tetons received nearly a foot of snow at mid to high elevations on Saturday into Sunday. The coming weekend holds some promise of additional precipitation, which we could surely use. It is still early in the season here, this is typical. It seems to me that most years a spares coverage at  varied elevations and aspects exists until sometime around December 22nd. Some years get an early snowfall, the majority seem to start much like this one. Grand Targhee benefits from a great location and seems to always open by Thanksgiving weekend under natural snow conditions offering limited terrain.  Remember, until about 4 years ago lift serviced skiing did not start until the first weekend in December for the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.  It would seem with the collective firing of the guns a little earlier this year that the riding public should benefit from the efforts to get you swinging chairs a little earlier.

11-22-12

Happy Thanksgiving!!! Lift served skiing hits Teton County tomorrow with the opening of Grand Targhee Resort. Touring on Teton pass today did provide some promising results, a base seems to be developing! There was some additional snow overnight which, combined with winds managed to fill in tracks left by the previous few days of skier and boarder traffic. By mid-day the pass was bustling with those eager to enjoy the gorgeous weather and fresh snow.

Grand Targhee should be able to open a fair amount of terrain, exactly how much remains to be told.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is scheduled to open on Saturday November 23, 2012. It seems as thought terrain will be limited to some manmade snow on Apres Vous. Get ready to “Rip the Strip”, wear your helmet. The lower elevations in Teton Village have little coverage at this time. Snowmaking efforts have been stymied by warmer temperatures, which is additionally effecting Snow King Resort.

11-19-12

People are getting after it here in the Tetons. The above skiers are skinning up after riding the shrubbery in the foreground. This weekend’s storm produced about 4″-6″ of precipitation in the mountains. Teton Pass saw heavy skier/boarder traffic over the weekend. In all honesty it looked more like deadfall and rock dodging combined with some bush whacking. Snow depths in most areas on the South side of the pass are 18″ or less. Be careful if you should decide to hike the N. side of the Pass. People are riding all over the place on a fairly low snow depth, so be very aware if you should decide to point it downhill. There is a fairly airy/ice chunkish layer sitting near or on the ground on most aspects that held snow from the late October storm cycle. This weekend’s snow was wet and fairly heavy. Be aware and be safe, early season conditions are prevalent on all aspects.

We are less than a week away from the opening of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s 2012/2013 season, the community has their collective fingers crossed for some natural snow and/or accommodating temperatures for the guys out there running the guns.

The storm over the weekend produced little precipitation in the Tetons. The mountains picked up a few more inches with less than an inch falling in the valley. Snow has been falling under fairly warm temps.

The above photo shows  how well Summer grooming in the Casper lift area worked out. The terrain looks quite smooth and currently holding snow in many areas that normally would not be holding snow.

Temperatures did remain cold and Snow King has also jumped in to the snow making race.

Many wonder if we will see the return of Snow King making an effort to open by Thanksgiving which had been the case until the last few years. If so, it looks like “Townee’s” will be in for a treat having lifts open a little earlier right out the back door.

11-8-12

After a beautiful Summer and Fall here in the Tetons, it seems as though Winter will be taking its time. The first storm cycle to hit the valley in October did provide a taste of what is to come and has left the surrounding peaks with a white cap. Some higher areas of the Tetons saw total accumulations nearing 2′. With more snow predicted over the next few days riders are wanting to wet their appetite. It does look like it will be a typical cycle of mountain snow and valley rain.

As the above picture shows, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is putting the hoses to work on Apres Vous in an effort to get a jump on Mother Nature. The  snow patches are edging closer. We do appreciate the time snowmakers are putting in when the currently finicky conditions allow. Their efforts help to ensure that there is adequate coverage for opening terrain upon the lower mountain during the early season. In the photo you can additionally make out some of the areas that saw Summer trail maintenance in the Casper area. The resort will be debuting the much anticipated new Casper Chairlift and its associated terrain enhancements this season.

Ski Season 2012/2013 is Underway

Lift serviced skiing kicked off Friday with the opening of Grand Targhee Resort. They reportedly opened 1500 acres to the riding public. Hundreds of skiers and snowboarders rejoiced under beautiful skies to take in their first lift served turns of the season. People gave good reviews of the early season snow conditions. Targhee’s higher base elevation and gentler slopes certainly lends itself to providing more consistent conditions than many ski resorts.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort opened with the Werner run on Apres Vous. A storm was slowly pushing into the valley throughout most of the day which made for high winds. Temperatures did remain fairly warm keeping the snow soft and somewhat creamy. Most people’s only gripe was the lack of terrain, which is not so unusual for this time of year. More snow is in the forecast, which should enable the resort to open more terrain as coverage increases.

November 5, 2012

All park roads will close to the public at 8 a.m. The exception is from the North Entrance to Mammoth and onto the Northeast Entrance and Cooke City(this section of road remains open year round). Roads will reopen in mid-December to over snow vehicles, ski and snowshoe travel. Take advantage of the remaining time and get into the park and take advantage of the diminished crowds to observe animals getting prepared for the coming Winter.

Exploring the park during the winter months provides a much more serene experience than during the Summer months.

This event brings riders of a kindred spirit together to reminisce about seasons past and to share anticipation of the season which is upon us. For a glimpse at the trailer click.
