Yellowstone Winter Use Update

Posted on: November 24th, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

December 18, 2014 thru March 1, 2015

Officials in Yellowstone National Park have determined new winter use limits for the 2014-2015 season. The new plan continues guided snowmobile and snowcoach tours in the park. Winter Season 2014/2015 will run between December 18, 2014 and March 1, 2015. The park is accessible as it has ever been during the Winter months. Book early as these trips are quite popular especially during peak periods of visitation. An experience not to be missed. Prepare for a long day filled with adventure.

The park service has also allows unguided individuals back into the park during the winter season. It has been years since private individuals have been allowed to explore the park on their own during the winter months. One group of up to five persons may be permitted into the park each day.  These numbers could grow as technological advances continue to allow vehicles to run cleaner and quieter. It seems as though this decision reflects the park’s desire to provide the public with desired uses in a sustainable way.

The Hole Concierge believes this decision is a step in the right direction. Greener technology has made vehicles, snowmobiles in particular, much cleaner and quieter than in the mid 90’s when studies regarding winter use and the future of snowmobiling in particular were strongly examined. Exploring Yellowstone in the winter is a magical experience. There are a very small number of people exploring the park each day in comparison to the  summer months.

I would be happy to help you coordinate your adventure into the world’s first national park.

Posted on: October 25th, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

November 7th at Snow King Resort

As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics, and twists & turns as the fantasy unfolds. “Land Of 1000 Dreams” is the 14th film in the Storm Show series, which began over a decade ago with a camera and a dream of documenting Jackson Hole’s unrivaled terrain and risk-taking athletes. Teaming up once again with the Full Room Productions crew, Storm Show’s 2014 ski/ride/adrenaline film promises to be its most adventurous undertaking to date, breaking off larger-than-life lines and first descents from the Jackson Hole backcountry and beyond.

LAND OF 1000 DREAMS – movie trailer from Storm Show on Vimeo.

Highlights include Derek Depiero’s first free-ski of the formidable ‘G-String,’ a 500-foot hourglass couloir with a mandatory 60+-foot air in the middle, often dreamed of but never attempted. Veteran producer and snowboarder Darrell Miller revisits the Billygoat Couloir, a.k.a. Lightning Bolt, first ridden in 2003 but never repeated, until now. Ripping fem-shredders Kelly Halpin & Elizabeth Koutrelakos shows us how it’s done on the steeps of Cody Peak, and ski legend Jeff Leger continues his death defying swan dives off of the biggest cliffs that Jackson Hole has to offer.

Jeremy Jones’ Higher

October 11, 2014

Jones and his crew are elevating their game and taking their quest to the next level for the third and final installment of the DEEPER, FURTHER, HIGHER trilogy from the award-winning producers at Teton Gravity Research. Presented by Subaru, JEREMY JONES’ HIGHER traces Jones’ snowboarding journey from hiking Cape Cod’s Jailhouse Hill as a child to accumulating several generations’ worth of wisdom and expertise about thriving and surviving in the winter wilderness.

Along with friends like Jackson Hole’s own Bryan Iguchi, Jeremy leaves tracks on signature lines in Jackson Hole, Lake Tahoe and other close-to-home playgrounds he’s made his own. He also makes history with far-flung first descents in the Eastern Alaska Range and the Himalayas of Nepal, where the stakes are as high as the peaks themselves.

$1 from every ticket sold to this premiere will be donated to support Protect our Winters. Jeremy started Protect Our Winters (POW) in 2007 to address the impact of climate change on our mountains. POW’s mission—to engage and mobilize the winter sports community to lead the fight against climate change—was founded on the idea that the collective power of the winter sports community is massive, and that if we can all work together, the end result can be revolutionary.

Shift Festival 2014

Posted on: September 26th, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

October 8-12, 2014

Held each October in the midst of the largest intact ecosystem in the Lower 48, SHIFT is an annual festival that celebrates the intersection of conservation with Nature, Culture and Adventure. The 2014 SHIFT Festival, which runs from October 8-12, includes speakers such as Barry Lopez, Dr. Marion Nestle, Ed Zahniser, Luther Propst, Auden Schendler and Asher Jay, as well as multiple programmatic pathways.

shift festival jackson hole

America’s first sustainable food festival activates the renowned bars, restaurants and foodists of Jackson Hole as we celebrate the interface of food, sustainability, health and place, connect people to the sources of their food, and strengthen our local food system.

The SHIFT Summit convenes leaders from GEMS who are working to preserve and sustain the natural capital of their communities. The Summit is built around the 50 winners of the 2014 SHIFT Sustainability Awards. The awards, which were decided by our SHIFT Partners, recognize the most effective, innovative sustainability initiatives currently underway in North American GEMS.

Conservation lies at the core of Jackson Hole’s environment, economy and character. Over the past 140 years, the region has been the epicenter of some of North America’s seminal conservation efforts, including the formation of Yellowstone, the world’s first national park, the drafting of the Wilderness Act, and the expansion of Grand Teton National Park to its current boundaries.

Throughout North America, some of our most beautiful and well-known communities—places like Bar Harbor, Moab, Sayulita and Hanalei—enjoy a similar relationship between economy, character and natural capital. We call such communities GEMS: Gateways to Environments of Major Significance. Each of these GEMS shares a fundamental reality: over the long term, they can be no healthier than the environments in which they reside.

These GEMS share another trait: they attract both millions of visitors each year and influential part-time residents. When they serve as models of sustainability, they have a unique opportunity to influence the behavior of their guests. By fostering sustainability in North American GEMS, SHIFT seeks to promote them as beacons of possibility—and, by extension, to affect the world they influence.

J.H. Farmer’s Market

Posted on: September 10th, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

Saturday mornings on the Town Square

The Jackson Hole Farmers Market occurs each Saturday morning on the Town Square from July 10 to September 19 for the Summer of 2014. The market runs from 8am to 12pm. Not only are there fruits and veggies, but baked goods, canned good and more. The community and visitors to the area have embraced the Farmers Market since it kicked off in the Summer of 2000. Attendance has steadily grown each year as the Farmer’s Market has become more diversified and now offers a larger number of vendors.
jhfm5
Raised in a family with a large garden I was exposed to fresh produce at an early age. Flavor is the best part, local produce tends take on the characteristics of its environment. High elevation, frost resistant crops that are widely grown in the area possess a fabulous crispness and taste.

The growing trend of Farmers Markets across the country has helped to nurture awareness of healthy eating, buying locally and getting to know your neighbors. The Hole Concierge strongly endorses increased consumption of organic foods, the localization of production and its inherent benefits. Farmers Markets provide healthy locally grown and produced products which in turn assists in creating sustainability within local economies. A number of small organic farms have cropped up in the area over the last few years creating jobs and reducing commuter traffic in the area.
jhfm6
Featured each week is a different chef, musician or group, and a non-profit. Vendors at the market donate 10% of their gross sales to the non-profit of the week. Over the past ten plus years the market has donated over $200,000 to local non-profit organizations. There are games for the kids and other features of the market. Hope to see you down on the Square.

Art Fair Jackson Hole

Posted on: August 3rd, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

July 11, 12, 13 and August 8, 9, 10 of Summer 2014

Art Fair Jackson Hole is held twice a summer. The art fair is held in Miller Park, just a few blocks South West from the Town Square on Deloney St. There are a large number of artists on display, a food court and live music. There are hands on art activities in which the whole family can participate. A number of local musicians perform throughout the weekend. One of my favorite Summer events, it has grown quite a bit over the years, but still maintains a unique atmosphere.

The Jackson Hole Art Association has cultivated this event into a great weekend of art. The fair was first held in 1965 in an effort to bring a diversity of artist to this quaint Western community. The three day format certainly is an enhancement giving folks a bit more time to make their way there. More than 150 artists are on display during this three day event.  Be sure to stop by and take a look. Take advantage the opportunity to meet the artists and view an amazing array mediums. The wide variety of things to take in is why I enjoy spending a leisurely afternoon checking the art fair out. Entry fee is $5/person.

Boiling River

Posted on: July 16th, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

If you are looking for an interesting side adventure, maybe try a trip to soak in the Boiling River. Located between Mammoth and Gardiner. There is a short hike of about .6 miles from the parking area to where you venture into the soaking area. The Boiling River merges with the Gardiner River creating a comfortable soaking area near the North East entrance to Yellowstone. In the Spring the Gardiner River flows are high with snowmelt, this is more of a mid to late Summer activity.

***Warning***

“Many of Yellowstone National Park’s thermally-influenced waters contain organisms that are known to cause serious skin rashes, infections, and/or primary amoebic meningitis, which can be quickly fatal. The thermal waters of Boiling River have been shown to support the organisms that can cause Primary amoebic meningoenchephalitis and Legionnaire’s disease. Avoid submerging your head and inhalation of thermal steam. If you have any signs of symptoms of irritation or disease seek medical help immediately. Swim at your own risk.” Hundreds of people swim in Boiling River each day. While the dangers are minimal, precautions should be taken. As a precaution it is recommended that you do not put your head below the surface.
