Teton Village Summer Activities

Teton Village Summer Activities are numerous. The base area of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is Teton Village. The quaint alpine village hosts an number of small shops, restaurants, and hotels.

There are numerous hiking trails in the area, hikers often use the tram to get to higher elevations before setting out for adventure. Hybrid and cruiser bicycle rentals are available to explore the community pathways system. As the mountain has finally begun to embrace its future, a system of lift serviced downhill mountain biking trails has evolved. There is always paragliding or rock climbing for those seeking a little more adrenalin. Adventure guides/instructors are available for hiking, downhill mountain biking, and climbing.

A 9-hole disc golf course is located on the lower flanks of the mountain. Ride the aerial tram to the summit of Rendevous Mountain and take in majestic views of the valley at 10,450′. Horseback riding tours depart throughout the day. Teton Village Trail Rides also offers evening chuckwagon dinner/trail rides.

Alive @ Five happens at 5pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. After taking in the progam on the Village Commons head up to the Couloir Restaurant at the top of the Bridger Gondola provides dining with elevated views at 9300′. Many locals believe that Couloir is one of the best Happy Hour experiences to share with their out of town guests.

Concerts on the Commons is a concert series featuring guest musicians on a few Sunday afternoon/evenings. The concerts are free and open to all ages. Bring a blanket and picnic basket if you want, food and beverages are available from many outlets Teton Village.

Children can be kept busy on the climbing wall or bungee trampoline. Don’t forget a towel and swimsuit and let them take advantage of the “pop-jet water fountain” area. There is a Kid’s Ranch Camp for all ages and a day care for children from 6 months to 2 years in age. The Kid’s Ranch also offers evening programs.

Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village is home to the Grand Teton Music Festival. This symphony orchestra hosts a number of evening performances each week from July thru August.

Jackson Hole Aerial Tram

The Jackson Hole Aerial Tram located in Teton Village offers dramatic views of the valley. A ride to the summit of Rendevous Mountain delivers you to 10450′ above sea level in about 18 minutes. There are a number of hiking trails that can be accessed from the summit. People will often use the tram to gain elevation and access trails for multi-day expeditions that extend into Grand Teton Nation Park.

Marmots are often seen scurrying around once you reach the summit. You are immersed in the Teton Range. On clear days views will extend into Idaho, additionally you can view the Absoroka, Gros Ventre, Big Hole, and Snake River Mountain Ranges. The braided channels of the Snake River lie before you on the valley floor. Wildlife is often spotted on both the ride up and down on the tramway. The tram depart about every 20 minutes.

Grab a waffle at Corbet’s Cabin while soaking up the views. The waffles are often worth the trip alone. Click for more Summer Tram Information. After checking out “the top of the world,” spend some time checking out the base area. Teton Village has remained quite quaint in comparison to other major ski resorts, there is plenty to do, with an ever expanding array of activities being offered.

In the next few years some big changes will be occurring at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, creating an even more diverse atmosphere.

Pedigree Sled Dog Race

In 1996 Frank Teasley, with the help of public nurse Jayne Ottman, launched the Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race. Increasing awareness about the need to ensure childhood immunization is one of the race’s main goals. The race is the largest sled dog race held in the lower 48 states, hosting a number of teams from outside the U.S.

This year the race course will be taking teams through eight Wyoming and Idaho communities before finishing in Park City, UT. The course will covering roughly 300+ miles. The starting point for the sled dog race is on the town square. As the event has evolved since the first stage was moved to a Friday night start on the town square. The move to the town square has injected the event with new energy. The move to downtown Jackson has helped to draw a larger crowd and created a more festive atmosphere. There will be music, food and hot beverages are available. Fireworks and a torchlight parade will follow the conclusion of the race stage at base of Snow King Mountain.

The course runs North along Broadway, then up Redmond and around to the base of Snow King Mountain. Following the event there is a chance to meet the mushers at a social mixer. Special public shuttles run from the town square to the finish line at the base of Snow King Mountain. Head downtown Friday night and take in this unique experience, The Sled Dog Race tends to be one of the highlights of the Winter season here in Jackson Hole. If there is a hockey game at the Snow King Center, take in the game after the race.

If the race inspires you to want to try your hand at dog sledding, there are vendors that offer a number of different tours in the area. You can even try your hand at mushing. Please contact us early, as these trips tend to book up well in advance.

Shadow Mountain

Explore Shadow Mountain for beautiful views of the Teton Range. Shadow Mountain provides a nice getaway. Without travelling too far for a little solitude. Dramatic views of the Tetons can be obtained. Be prepared for a bumpy dirt road to access the area.

Mountain biking and ATV’s are permitted in this area, as it is National Forest. A trail network runs through the mountain area. Not overly crowded, yet virtually within Grand Teton National Park. Maps can be obtained at the Visitor’s Center in Jackson. They are located at 532 N. Cache. Their number is (307) 733-3316.

If you are hungry and in need of a drink stop by Dornan’s. You can also rent a bicycle from them. Stop into Moosely Mountaineering for your gear needs.

String Lake

String Lake is located in Grand Teton National Park. The trail head is accessed at the south end of String Lake via the String Lake parking area. The trail provides access to Jenny, Leigh & String lakes, Hidden Falls, Inspiration Point, Cascade and Paintbrush canyons. The lake is located at the base of Mount Saint John, and connects Leigh Lake to Jenny Lake. You can branch out, if you want, and create various loops by linking different segments of trail to thoroughly explore the area’s entire trail network.

Circling String Lake itself provides a hike of just less than 3.5 miles with just under 600′ in elevation gain. The trail’s elevation gain occurs along the backside of the lake. As the trail meanders west along the very base of the Tetons, wonderful views of the area abound. The water tends to be fairly warm due to the lake’s shallowness. Bring a swim suit and a towel so you can take a dip. The water’s clarity is unsurpassed. The lake is quite shallow.

String Lake has always been a great place to kayak or canoe on calm waters. In recent years the lake has become quite popular with Stand Up Paddle Boarders. You can rent watercraft at at Dornan’s, located near the Moose visitors center. Inner tubes are fun to take out as well. On the weekends it can get a little crowded, locals come out in good numbers.

To get there, turn west off the Teton Park Road at the North Jenny Lake Junction and continue roughly 1.5 miles to the String Lake Trailhead. There is a large parking area, it will fill up at mid afternoon during peak season.

Things to do in Jackson Hole

Jackson Hole and the surrounding area offer unlimited possibilities. No matter what the time of year is you can always get out and experience something wonderful.

Late Spring and Fall do present some challenges since many vendors are closed and access to the National Parks is limited. You can find something to occupy your time. Local galleries provide a wide array of art. Wildlife is always out there, so sign up for a tour or ask some locals where to look and go on your own.

The Summer months in Jackson provide the widest array of activities, and the largest crowds. Planning items in advance can help make things a lot smoother. Most activities are available at multiple times per day.

Hot air ballooning only goes at the crack of dawn, it is well worth getting out of bed for this one! If aerial adventure is your game, then paragliding might be just what the doctor ordered.

Whitewater and Scenic rafting are available in multiple locations and go at all hours of the day.

Horseback riding is a popular activity here in the Jackson Hole area. Tours depart at all times of day. Most folks opt for a two or four hour ride. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and multi-day trips as well.

During the later Summer months and into the Fall, Jackson becomes a destination for fly fishing. This is a great way to get out on the water and stalk the native cutthroat trout.

If you are looking to get out on a bicycle, there is an extensive trail system that runs throughout the valley. A number of single track trails and dirt roads are available for mountain biking. We are blessed with a paved bicycle trail encompasses nearly the entire valley, it will even get you up into Grand Teton National Park.

If you have children, the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village, has a number of activities. This includes a ropes course, the aerial tram, lift served mountain biking, a climbing wall, bungee trampoline, 18-hole disc golf course. You can additionally take horseback tours, do a chuckwagon dinner, or take the gondola up to mid-mountain and opt for happy hour or dinner at Couloir restaurant. Snow King Mountain has a Scenic Chairlift, Bungee Trampoline, Alpine Slide and Alpine Coaster, as well as a TreeTop Adventure Course to keep you busy.

Wildlife Tours will get you familiarized with this vast ecosystem. An expert guide will lead on an educational tour, you can take it all in since your not behind the wheel. Guides are available for Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks as well as other areas. These tours are highly suggested for photographer among us.

There is quite a bit of music offered up throughout the season, much of it free & outdoor, take in a show while you are in town!

Phelps Lake

Phelps Lake in Grand Teton national Park can provide for excellent day hiking. Many will choose to only go to the overlook and return to the comfort of their vehicles and touring of the park. Those looking for a little more can choose to circumnavigate the lake or explore Death Canyon. Phelps Lake serves at the gateway to Death Canyon.

The area is beautiful. Once you get beyond the overlook the crowds will disappear. Pack some lunch, making it a day hike up Death Canyon provides dramatic contrast. The canyon walls tower above you. At the top of the hike there are sweet views of the Teton Shelf.

Trails lead to the lake from the Laurence Rockefeller Center as well. You can add a couple miles to your adventure and see the center as well.

Treetop Adventure Course

Duckie Tours

Rubber Duckies, are inflatable kayaks designed for aquatic exploration. This a unique and exciting way of river running is safe and fun for the whole family. Inflatable Kayaking is far more thrilling than traditional white-water rafting and have no problem handling turbulent water.

These boats are extremely maneuverable and quite resilient. One of the most exciting ways to ride the river. The boat rides low in the water making smaller waves during the late summer much more fun. No previous river experience is necessary. Experienced instructors will familiarize you with equipment. After providing a brief river safety course and paddling instruction your adventure begins. You will find these watercraft amazingly simple to control. The section of the Snake River that is run, provides class III rapids. All equipment and transportation is included.

Myself and members of my family have enjoyed taking the Duckies down the Snake. Guided trips are offered by Rendevous River Sports.

Zipline Adventures

Zip Yellowstone operates out of two area. Gardner and Big Sky. Combination packages such as the Zip n’ Dip are quite popular.

The Gallatin River ZipLine is located between Bozeman and Big Sky, Montana, right off highway 191, just over an hour drive North from West Yellowstone. The dramatic scenery includes towering limestone cliffs, pine forest and a rushing river. This is the area where the movie A River Runs Through It was filmed. On these tours, you start by ascending sky bridges to a tree platform 55ft in the air! Both tours have two Zips across the Gallatin River! The Super Zip adds to the experience with more adventure elements. Test your balance on our swaying wooden swings or try our optional cargo net climb.

Yellowstone Ranch ZipLine is located on the historic Stermitz Ranch in the mountains bordering Yellowstone Park, just outside of Gardiner, MT. The tour will take you up a mountainside and then soaring back down. Gaze at the gorgeous pristine vistas, listen to the gurgling mountain stream and watch for wildlife on this remote and scenic property. To add to the thrills, go for the Grande Tour. Two of these zips are a breathtaking 1200+ft and take you flying ridge to ridge, 200ft above Cinnabar Creek! The trips meet in Gardiner and we shuttle you to and from the zip line course.

Grand Teton and Yellowstone Open

The South entrance to Yellowstone National Park, which is the nearest to Jackson Hole, is ready to accept visitors. Spring is an adventurous time of year to visit the area. Weather can be unpredictable, but wildlife is on the move! The melting snowpack provides a beautiful contrast to the local mountains.

Most animals in the area will follow the receding snow line into the high country surrounding the valley. Elk in particular migrate in large number in and out of Yellowstone, wintering here on the National Elk Refuge. You may see large numbers of animals still on the refuge or just a few stragglers, depending upon the snowpack.

Teton Ice Park

Ice climbing in Jackson Hole has never been closer. The Teton Ice Park provides the easiest access ice climbing in the Jackson area. The ice park has created a convenient venue in which to practice ice climbing. This Winter the park has moved over the Tetons to Jackson, and now finds its home at the base of Snow King Mountain Resort. By using low-flow shower heads and some mining pipe to spray water on a 40 foot retaining wall, the resort has created multiple features upon which to climb. The North facing aspect keeps the ice in ideal condition. The venue is perfect for learning basic climbing skills. The multiple features also serve as a practice area for more advanced climbers looking to hone their techniques.

Aerial Boundaries is operating the park and offers classes to all levels of ice climbers, from folks who have never climbed a single thing, to those who are looking to improve upon their current skill set. The features vary in size and with with some being 30’+. Ice climbing is a fun and exciting sport, explore this activity while visiting here. There are not too many places that have such convenient access to ice like this.

Access to the Teton Ice Park is available by purchasing a Day Pass or Punch Card. All users will need to pass a skills assessment. Day passes are $20 and can be purchased on site during open climbing hours. Please contact Aerial Boundaries to arrange access and/or classes. The park is located behind the Love Ridge Condominium complex, above the parking area by the Rafferty lift.

On clear days spectacular views of the Tetons and the Teton Pass areas can be had from the climbing venue. The ice park itself is pretty cool to see for itself.

Ranger Guided Snowshoeing

Join a ranger for an educational and fun hike through the snow. Rangers offer guided snowshoe hikes from the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center.

Programs begin on December 26th and run through mid-March, snow depth permitting. The snowshoe walk lasts 2 hours. Beginning at 1:30 each day and ending at 3:30.

Reservations are required, call (307) 739-3399 for more details and to make reservations. Reservations are accepted beginning on December 1st. A $5 donation is suggested for the rental of snowshoes (provided during the ranger lead program). Support your national Parks. The program is a free service of the Ranger Programs from Grand Teton National Park.

Please wear appropriate winter clothing (e.g. hat, gloves, snow/wind pants, boots, etc.) and don’t forget your sunscreen and sunglasses.
