Concerts on the Commons 2018

Concerts on the Commons in Teton Village on Sunday evenings throughout the summer have developed into quite the night. Kicking off at 5pm and generally wrapping up around 9pm. The “Commons” area in Teton Village serves as an intimate outdoor concert venue at the base of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The family friendly nature lends itself to a fun night out for the whole crew. There are a number of food and beverage options available. Many folks will make a picnic out of the event. Bring a blanket, stretch out on the lawn, and enjoy the show.

Historic Downtown Walking Tour

Sponsored by the Jackson Hole Historic Society and Museum, immerse yourself in the Old West. These tours are of no cost and will visit the buildings that helped sculpt the face of Jackson. Tour guides will provide an in depth background on the town of Jackson and its influence on the valley of Jackson Hole and the National Parks. Many a colorful character has graced the valley with his or her presence. These tours provide terrific insight into what Jackson was like during the days of the Wild West.

These free tours begin at the statue at the center of the Town Square and end at the Historic Society Museum.

Tours take place from Memorial Day to Late September.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday tours begin at 10:30 a.m. at the center of the town square.

Thin Air Shakespeare

July 7th, 8th, 9th then again on the 13th, 14th, & 15th

Macbeth is this years feature for Thin Air Shakespeare. Showing at the Center for the Arts’ outdoor lawn venue. The lawn opens for seating at 6:30pm with the show commencing at 7:30pm. Bring a blanket and picnic dinner along to enjoy. Be sure to get there a little early to ensure you get a good spot. A bit of bug spray is recommended. The intimate space makes for fabulous viewing. The experience is wonderful, I look forward to this opportunity each Summer. The best part……it is free!!!

The director has put a wonderful twist/flavor into this version of Shakespeare’s classic. Shakespeare’s most feared and popular tragedy, Macbeth spins a tale of magic, destiny, betrayal, and ambition as we watch the timeless push and pull of one of the most powerful couples in literary history.

Kicking off during the Summer of 2013, Thin Air Shakespeare is a community favorite. The setting is unique and the experience wonderful.

July 4th 2018 will be a fun filled day in Jackson Hole, actually the 3rd & 4th look pretty good. There is a lot to keep you busy from sun up to sun down. Be prepared for the crowds. There tends to be more vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic than any other day in the valley. It is good to find a nice parking spot, try the public parking garage located on Millward, then set out by foot or by bike. There will be some congestion getting out of and around town after the fireworks display.

Town of Jackson

July 4:

7AM to 10:30AM Street Breakfast, on Center St, by the Town Square.

10:30AM Fourth of July Parade. The annual parade begins on Snow King Avenue from the Rodeo Grounds to Glenwood, continues on Broadway, and ends on Willow Street.

2PM to 10:30PM Concessions, family activities, and live entertainment. This a fabulous community event. The Grand Teton Music festival will be broadcast live from Walk Festival Hall during the show on a Jumbotron video screen at 6pm.

5:30PM Live music at the Snow King Ballfield prior to the fireworks. Food and Beverages will be available.

6PM Watch the shootout on the town square. If you haven’t seen it, this nightly event is not to be missed.

8PM Check out the rodeo at the fairgrounds.

10PM Fireworks!!! Held at the base of Snow King Mountain. This annual event is put on by the Jaycees, and packs quite a punch. This will be the final year that the Jaycees will be hosting the fireworks, as membership has dwindled.

Teton Village July 3rd and 4th

Teton Village will be celebrating “Red, White and 2!” The village will be hosting two nights of fireworks and fourth of July celebrations on July 3rd and 4th.

July 3rd:Spend your night taking some great music in an intimate venue. Music starts at 6:00pm, with Mandolin Orange as the headliner, followed by the only fireworks show in the area at 10:00PM.

July 4th: The music starts up with the Jazz Foundation of JH at 4:00 PM in the Village Commons. Grand Teton Music Festivals Music in the Hole simulcast from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, followed by Calle Mambo, bringing a high-energy, Latin and Salsa music to the stage. Another round of fireworks follow, starting at 10:00 PM. Food & Beverage Vendors will be on site and picnics are welcome. Please leave your pets at home.

Old West Brewfest

Like any mountain town with a few breweries, Jackson holds an annual “Brewfest.” The Old West Brewfest coincides with Old West Days, the schedule of events surrounding Memorial Day Weekend. The weekend is full of entertainment for all ages. Sample regional brews on the Town Square Saturday afternoon.

The peaks and glaciers that house the water for local brews are located just up the road in Grand Teton National Park. The event is located on the North side of the Town Square. A fun filled afternoon is sure to be had. You can vote for your favorite beverages, prizes are awarded in the late afternoon.

This is the true kickoff for Summer activities in Jackson Hole. Among other things; the scenic chair and aerial tram open up, the alpine slide begins operation, all roadways in the Parks are generally open.

Old West Days 2018

The Memorial Day Weekend in Jackson Hole Has a lot to offer. A full schedule of events keeps the town buzzing with activity. This year Jackson Hole with be celebrating the 35th Anniversary of “Old West Days.”

The Mountain Man Rendevous and Antler Rendevous are ongoing throughout the weekend at the Teton County Fairgrounds.

Don’t miss parade downtown on Saturday morning at 10am. There is a Brew Fest held on the town square on Saturday as well, which provides a good opportunity to sample some locally crafted beers.

Chemist Shop at Terra

Dana has worked to develop Terra into a unique boutique that visitors and locals love to frequent. Women’s and children’s clothing is the focus at Terra. The shop has built a strong reputation for bringing Jackson a well-edited selection of specialty designers from season to season. The boutique has been featured in Lucky magazine, Town & Country, The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar, and Snow. Saturday….May 12, 2018

Snow King Ball Field will be the venue from 12pm to 5pm, the ball field is located right at the base of Snow King Mountain. Just head South on Cache St. from the Town Square and you will run right into it.

The fair is hosted by the Jackson Hole Energy Sustainability Project. For 10 plus years this event has been a fun Spring event. The fair now draws over 2000 participants.

Eco-Fair celebrates environmental stewardship and features sustainability-oriented booths, live music, local food, demonstrations, kids’ activities, raffle prizes and more. Jackson is attempting to make larger strides, as are many communities, to leave less of a footprint. There is a tremendous amount of innovation and new ideas that can be taken in at the fair.

It is Spring in Jackson, so be prepared for potentially variable weather.

Be prepared to have an enjoyable time. I generally walk away with a full belly and a bit of new knowledge about how do my part in saving the planet.

Admission is free with $5 suggested donation….NO DOGS.

Spring in Yellowstone & Grand Teton

Winter’s grip on the National Parks is easing, roads are opening, for Current Road Conditions in Yellowstone.

If you are looking for a leisurely adventure, I would suggest touring Yellowstone and meandering up to Chico Hot Springs for a little R & R.

Grand Teton National Park has completed plowing and most roadways are currently open. Rent a bike if you are visiting the area and take advantage of this unique opportunity to explore the park. People from all over the local area look forward to this window of time each Spring. On a sunny weekend day the parking area will be overflowing as people venture forth.

After the park opens in early May, bicycles can still be used in the park utilizing the pathway system. The Jackson Hole valley has an extensive network of paved pathways. As temperatures moderate and trails dry out, mountain biking is a popular activity. There are an abundant number of trail options throughout the valley.

Automobiles will be allowed on Teton park roads beginning May 4th, 2018. Don’t miss out on exploring the Tetons during this transitional season.

Scenic raft trips are running if you feel like getting out on the water, spice it up with some whitewater action if you need to get the adrenalin pumping.

Jackson Hole Rendevous 2018

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort will be celebrating the season with a weekend of events with the Jackson Hole Rendevous Fest. Started over 10 years ago, this event has slowly gained momentum and now encompasses an entire weekend. Look for more to be added.

Portugal. The Man will grace the stage in Teton Village on Saturday night. It will be a busy weekend in town. Utilize public transportation and taxi services, the police will be out in force. Use your head, be wise and alert, stay out of trouble and don’t do anything stupid!

Thursday March 15th

Devon Allman Project with special guest Duane Betts will play under the tram at 3pm

Friday March 16th

The Mavericks will headline a show on the Town Square in downtown Jackson. The opening act will be Frankie Ballard, gates open at 5pm.

Saturday March 17th

Portugal. The Man will take the stage in Teton Village. The opening act will be Michael Franti and Spearhead, gates open at 3pm. Fireworks to follow the conclusion of the concert.

Formerly the know as the Jackson Hole Mountain Festival, this weekend promises to be fun filled. Past acts have included zac Brown Band, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Blues Traveler, O.A.R., G. Love and Special Sauce, Ozomatli, Mix Master Mike, and others.

Dick’s Ditch Banked Slalom 2018

The Dick’s Ditch Banked Slalom is an exhilerating twist on the traditional slalom. Course inspection begins on Friday. The format for the race weekend will hold qualifiers on Saturday and “winner-takes-all” on Sunday.

Dick’s Ditch Classic utilizes a natural ditch which winds its way down most of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The race event utilizes the ravine which runs through the middle portion of the mountain. This “big mountain ditch” has huge banked walls with steep pitches and opportunities for plenty of air. The course’s natural terrain is “enhanced” with some manmade features providing an amazing venue for this ski and snowboard race. The event format, as the name implies, is that of a banked slalom. This race course changes a bit each year and is like nothing you’ve seen before.

This is a wild event which is sure to feature a few spills and some wild riding. Rollers, gaps, bumps and jumps are just a few of the sculpted features that keep racers on edge. The challenging course pushes racers physically and mentally.

Competition heats up over the weekend as racers become familiar with the course and conditions. There is prize money and awards up for grabs. This event attracts many of the area’s best all-around riders. Skiers and boarders look forward to this event each year as competition continually heats up.

As the event has matured over the years the course has become more exciting and refined. Doing some laps off of the Marmot Chair can provide some good viewing opportunities from the chair and along the course which snakes down the edge of Amphitheater. Be sure to take in some of the action over the weekend if you are out riding JHMR over the weekend.

Jackson Hole Snocross Nationals

December 8 & 9, 2017

Jackson Hole will be hosting a snowmobile snocross at the base of Snow King Mountain. This will be an exciting event. The International Series of Champions hosts the race. Part of an eight race series that culminates in the crowning of an overall champion. Jackson hosts the annual World Championship Snowmobile Hillclimb and has hosted snocross events in the past, so this one should go off well. The entire series is broadcast on CBS network television.

Snocross is the most exciting, fan friendly form of snowmobile racing. It combines the big-air jumps and exciting action of motocross with the crisp winter environment, providing snowbelt race fans with race action, world class athletes to cheer, and fun, family venues to visit. The action happens during a time of year and in geographic locations where it’s the premier race event of the season, on challenging, professionally designed and graded tracks.

Jackson Hole Opening Day 2017

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is opening on November 24th. The resort has been working hard to get it done! We have had some great early season snowfall.

Late October and early November have seen some great storm cycles. At elevation there is plenty of snow. The backcountry has been providing nice turns and Grand Targhee Resort opened last weekend.

With cold temperature the mountain resort was also able to blow a decent amount of snow to supplement the natural snowfall.Recent warmer days in the valley have halted snowmaking for now. Snow King Mountain should be able to come on line the next time the temperatures dip and they are bale to complete their snowmaking.

Grand Targhee Opening Day!!!

Grand Targhee will be opening this weekend! Officially kicking off lift served skiing in the Jackson Area, thank you Targhee. Last weekend’s storm dropped around 40″ in the the Tetons at upper elevations. It looks like another storm system passing through the Tetons over this coming week. Snow conditions have been nice in the backcountry. Resort preparations seem to be going well. It should be a fabulous opening day!!

Free Public Planetarium Programs

Throughout the winter, Wyoming Stargazing will be offering indoor virtual tours of the solar system and the Milky Way Galaxy. Inside the inflatable planetarium, your hosts explain why the stars shine, why they seem to move across the sky, why the constellations change throughout the year and why the arms of the Milky Way Galaxy appear the way they do above our heads. You’ll have the opportunity to ask all the burning questions you’ve ever had about the Universe. These hour-long events will consist of three consecutive 20-minute programs inside the inflatable planetarium from. Participants are welcome to show up anytime during the programs.

String Lake

String Lake is located in Grand Teton National Park. The trail head is accessed at the south end of String Lake via the String Lake parking area. The trail provides access to Jenny, Leigh & String lakes, Hidden Falls, Inspiration Point, Cascade and Paintbrush canyons. The lake is located at the base of Mount Saint John, and connects Leigh Lake to Jenny Lake. You can branch out, if you want, and create various loops by linking different segments of trail to thoroughly explore the area’s entire trail network.

Circling String Lake itself provides a hike of just less than 3.5 miles with just under 600′ in elevation gain. The trail’s elevation gain occurs along the backside of the lake. As the trail meanders west along the very base of the Tetons, wonderful views of the area abound. The water tends to be fairly warm due to the lake’s shallowness. Bring a swim suit and a towel so you can take a dip. The water’s clarity is unsurpassed. The lake is quite shallow.

String Lake has always been a great place to kayak or canoe on calm waters. In recent years the lake has become quite popular with Stand Up Paddle Boarders. You can rent watercraft at at Dornan’s, located near the Moose visitors center. Inner tubes are fun to take out as well. On the weekends it can get a little crowded, locals come out in good numbers.

To get there, turn west off the Teton Park Road at the North Jenny Lake Junction and continue roughly 1.5 miles to the String Lake Trailhead. There is a large parking area, it will fill up at mid afternoon during peak season.

Hiking the King

Get a quick and easy workout right on the edge of town. Hiking Snow King will provide dramatic views of the valley, glimpses of wildlife and a great workout. By the time you summit your worries will be left behind. Bring some water along so you don’t get dehydrated. Many locals take advantage of the mountain being “in their backyard.” During seasons of operation, one can download utilizing the Summit Chair for $2 and enjoy sweeping views of the valley while descending in comfort. The hike takes from 40 minutes to an hour depending upon individual fitness level.

Take advantage of the picnic tables on the deck of the summit house and pack a snack, lunch or dinner. During the long days of summer the Summit Chair operates until 8pm. If you simply want to take in the view and forgo the workout, $15 is the price to ride. There is a short nature trail to tour at the top. The chairlift ride takes roughly 15 minutes. Your ride can be captured on film, there is a company that offers photos of your chair as you summit the mountain, quite a nice shot.

There are a few different ways to go up and/or down the mountain. Consulting staff or obtaining a map will help you select the best route for your hike.

Fall Arts Festival 2017

The Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival has become one of the most widely recognized art events the Rockies. Each Fall thousands of art enthusiasts descend upon Jackson for this event. The 2016 Festival is scheduled to take place September 6th thru the 17th this year. The combination of art, music, and cuisine can overwhelm the senses.

Don’t miss out on this extravaganza! There are a number of events occurring throughout this 11 day period. Local galleries will have featured artists in-house throughout the festival. The Fall Arts Festival has grown into quite an event over the years. The complete 2017 Fall Arts Festival Program is online!

Wednesday the 6thh the festival kicks off with the Western Design Conference Gala Event: Fashion and Jewelry Show.

Friday the 8th don’t miss the Palates and Paletes Gallery Walk, a local favorite. Palates and Palettes pairs local restaurants and caterers with galleries for an incredible social evening of fine cuisine, art and wine right downtown. A gallery walk like no other, downtown truly comes alive.

Sunday the 10th will feature the Taste of the Tetons. Valley chefs, restaurants, and caterers put their best culinary work on display for sampling. Each taste ticket is $1. Tastes generally range from two to four tickets. In addition to the open-air tasting fair, participants will enjoy “Pickin’ in the Park” live musical entertainment presented by the Howdy Pardners Ambassador Club. the 15th Annual Takin’ It to the Streets, a juried art fair featuring 40 local artists, and the Rotary Supper Club’s Wine Tasting and Silent Auction! Also on the 10th is the Takin’ it to the Streets event featuring 40 local artists.

Saturday the 16th the Quick Draw competition and auction is also quite popular, celebrating its 20th year as part of the annual Fall Arts Festival. The “Quick Draw” features nationally, regionally, and locally recognized artists who will demonstrate their skills at this unique alfresco event. One-of a-kind artwork will be auctioned off following the ninety minute creative process where spectators will watch artists paint and sculpt and create before your eyes.
