Dick’s Ditch Banked Slalom 2015

Posted on: February 27th, 2015 by thcAdmin No Comments

March 6th-8th

The Dick’s Ditch Banked Slalom for 2015 goes back to a single weekend format this year. Course inspection begin on Friday. The format for the race weekend will hold qualifiers on Saturday and “winner-takes-all” on Sunday.

Dick’s Ditch Classic utilizes a natural ditch which winds its way down most of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The race event utilizes the ravine which runs through the middle portion of the mountain. “This “big mountain ditch” has huge banked walls with steep pitches and opportunities for plenty of air. The course’s natural terrain is “enhanced” with some manmade features providing an amazing venue for this ski and snowboard race. The event format, as the name implies, is that of a banked slalom. This race course changes a bit each year and is like nothing you’ve seen before.

This is a wild event which is sure to feature a few spills and some wild riding. Rollers, gaps, bumps and jumps are just a few of the sculpted features that keep racers on edge. The challenging course pushes racers physically and mentally.

Competition heats up over the weekend as racers become familiar with the course and conditions. There is prize money and awards up for grabs. This event attracts many of the area’s best all-around riders. Skiers and boarders look forward to this event each year as competition continually heats up.

As the event has matured over the years the course has become more exciting and refined. Doing some laps off of the Marmot Chair can provide some good viewing opportunities from the chair and along the course which snakes down the edge of Amphitheater. Be sure to take in some of the action over the weekend if you are out riding JHMR over the weekend.

Teton Ice Park

Posted on: January 20th, 2015 by thcAdmin No Comments

Ice climbing in Jackson Hole has never been closer. The Teton Ice Park provides the easiest access ice climbing in the Jackson area. The ice park has created a convenient venue in which to practice ice climbing. This Winter the park has moved over the Tetons to Jackson, and now finds its home at the base of Snow King Mountain Resort. By using low-flow shower heads and some mining pipe to spray water on a 40 foot retaining wall, the resort has created multiple features upon which to climb. The North facing aspect keeps the ice in ideal condition. The venue is perfect for learning basic climbing skills. The multiple features also serve as a practice area for more advanced climbers looking to hone their techniques.

The features vary in size and with with some being 30’+. Ice climbing is a fun and exciting sport, explore this activity while visiting here. There are not too many places that have such convenient access to ice like this.

Access to the Teton Ice Park is available by purchasing a Day Pass or Punch Card. All users will need to pass a skills assessment. Day passes are $20 and can be purchased on site during open climbing hours. Please contact Aerial Boundaries to arrange access and/or classes. The park is located behind the Love Ridge Condominium complex, above the parking area by the Rafferty lift.

Jeremy Jones’ Higher

October 11, 2014

Jones and his crew are elevating their game and taking their quest to the next level for the third and final installment of the DEEPER, FURTHER, HIGHER trilogy from the award-winning producers at Teton Gravity Research. Presented by Subaru, JEREMY JONES’ HIGHER traces Jones’ snowboarding journey from hiking Cape Cod’s Jailhouse Hill as a child to accumulating several generations’ worth of wisdom and expertise about thriving and surviving in the winter wilderness.

Along with friends like Jackson Hole’s own Bryan Iguchi, Jeremy leaves tracks on signature lines in Jackson Hole, Lake Tahoe and other close-to-home playgrounds he’s made his own. He also makes history with far-flung first descents in the Eastern Alaska Range and the Himalayas of Nepal, where the stakes are as high as the peaks themselves.

$1 from every ticket sold to this premiere will be donated to support Protect our Winters. Jeremy started Protect Our Winters (POW) in 2007 to address the impact of climate change on our mountains. POW’s mission—to engage and mobilize the winter sports community to lead the fight against climate change—was founded on the idea that the collective power of the winter sports community is massive, and that if we can all work together, the end result can be revolutionary.

Shift Festival 2014

Posted on: September 26th, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

October 8-12, 2014

Held each October in the midst of the largest intact ecosystem in the Lower 48, SHIFT is an annual festival that celebrates the intersection of conservation with Nature, Culture and Adventure. The 2014 SHIFT Festival, which runs from October 8-12, includes speakers such as Barry Lopez, Dr. Marion Nestle, Ed Zahniser, Luther Propst, Auden Schendler and Asher Jay, as well as multiple programmatic pathways.

shift festival jackson hole

America’s first sustainable food festival activates the renowned bars, restaurants and foodists of Jackson Hole as we celebrate the interface of food, sustainability, health and place, connect people to the sources of their food, and strengthen our local food system.

The SHIFT Summit convenes leaders from GEMS who are working to preserve and sustain the natural capital of their communities. The Summit is built around the 50 winners of the 2014 SHIFT Sustainability Awards. The awards, which were decided by our SHIFT Partners, recognize the most effective, innovative sustainability initiatives currently underway in North American GEMS.

Conservation lies at the core of Jackson Hole’s environment, economy and character. Over the past 140 years, the region has been the epicenter of some of North America’s seminal conservation efforts, including the formation of Yellowstone, the world’s first national park, the drafting of the Wilderness Act, and the expansion of Grand Teton National Park to its current boundaries.

Throughout North America, some of our most beautiful and well-known communities—places like Bar Harbor, Moab, Sayulita and Hanalei—enjoy a similar relationship between economy, character and natural capital. We call such communities GEMS: Gateways to Environments of Major Significance. Each of these GEMS shares a fundamental reality: over the long term, they can be no healthier than the environments in which they reside.

These GEMS share another trait: they attract both millions of visitors each year and influential part-time residents. When they serve as models of sustainability, they have a unique opportunity to influence the behavior of their guests. By fostering sustainability in North American GEMS, SHIFT seeks to promote them as beacons of possibility—and, by extension, to affect the world they influence.

J.H. Farmer’s Market

Posted on: September 10th, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

Saturday mornings on the Town Square

The Jackson Hole Farmers Market occurs each Saturday morning on the Town Square from July 10 to September 19 for the Summer of 2014. The market runs from 8am to 12pm. Not only are there fruits and veggies, but baked goods, canned good and more. The community and visitors to the area have embraced the Farmers Market since it kicked off in the Summer of 2000. Attendance has steadily grown each year as the Farmer’s Market has become more diversified and now offers a larger number of vendors.
jhfm5
Raised in a family with a large garden I was exposed to fresh produce at an early age. Flavor is the best part, local produce tends take on the characteristics of its environment. High elevation, frost resistant crops that are widely grown in the area possess a fabulous crispness and taste.

The growing trend of Farmers Markets across the country has helped to nurture awareness of healthy eating, buying locally and getting to know your neighbors. The Hole Concierge strongly endorses increased consumption of organic foods, the localization of production and its inherent benefits. Farmers Markets provide healthy locally grown and produced products which in turn assists in creating sustainability within local economies. A number of small organic farms have cropped up in the area over the last few years creating jobs and reducing commuter traffic in the area.
jhfm6
Featured each week is a different chef, musician or group, and a non-profit. Vendors at the market donate 10% of their gross sales to the non-profit of the week. Over the past ten plus years the market has donated over $200,000 to local non-profit organizations. There are games for the kids and other features of the market. Hope to see you down on the Square.

Art Fair Jackson Hole

Posted on: August 3rd, 2014 by thcAdmin No Comments

July 11, 12, 13 and August 8, 9, 10 of Summer 2014

Art Fair Jackson Hole is held twice a summer. The art fair is held in Miller Park, just a few blocks South West from the Town Square on Deloney St. There are a large number of artists on display, a food court and live music. There are hands on art activities in which the whole family can participate. A number of local musicians perform throughout the weekend. One of my favorite Summer events, it has grown quite a bit over the years, but still maintains a unique atmosphere.
art fair jh
The Jackson Hole Art Association has cultivated this event into a great weekend of art. The fair was first held in 1965 in an effort to bring a diversity of artist to this quaint Western community. The three day format certainly is an enhancement giving folks a bit more time to make their way there. More than 150 artists are on display during this three day event.  Be sure to stop by and take a look. Take advantage the opportunity to meet the artists and view an amazing array mediums. The wide variety of things to take in is why I enjoy spending a leisurely afternoon checking the art fair out. Entry fee is $5/person.
