Steeldrivers…St. John’s Hospital Benefit

Posted on: July 31st, 2016 by thcAdmin No Comments

July 31st

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of St. John’s Medical Center, St. John’s Hospital Foundation is hosting a birthday party open to the entire community on Sunday, July 31st at the Snow King Ballfield. Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band The SteelDrivers is headlining this free, family-friendly event to thank the community for supporting St. John’s Medical Center.

The St. John’s Hospital Foundation is thrilled to bring the 2016 Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band The SteelDrivers to Jackson. After winning a first-time Grammy award for the acclaimed #1 album The Muscle Shoals Recordings, The SteelDrivers are taking 2016 by storm. The group has played to numerous sold-out venues this spring.

“What better way to celebrate one of the community’s most important assets – St. John’s Medical Center – than with a community celebration and birthday party,” said John Goettler, Foundation president. “The Jackson Hole community has been incredibly supportive of St. John’s Medical Center since it was built 100 years ago. We are grateful for the commitment and financial support of our community donors, and this party is a chance for the Foundation to say thank you! We hope that everyone in the community will come and join the celebration.”

Festivities will begin at 4:00 pm with the Hootenanny Allstars, featuring several members of the Jackson Hole Hootenanny. Brent Moyer and Friends take the stage next, with special guest Nashville artist Mike Dowling on guitar. Rounding out the concert program is the Nashville-based band The SteelDrivers, which has been playing to sold-out audiences throughout the country. The music portions of the Centennial Celebration will be produced by Jackson Hole Live.

The Jackson Hole Hootenanny, itself a historic institution, goes back 50 years when Bill Briggs brought artists and musicians together under a bridge in Grand Teton National Park. In the 1990s, the Hoot (as most people call it) moved to Dornan’s Bar in Moose and showcases musicians every Monday night.

Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brent Moyer moved from Jackson Hole to Nashville in 1986, but makes a pilgrimage each year to reconnect with the Jackson music scene. Known to many as the Global Cowboy, which is also the name of his 2008 recording, Moyer has released a total of 13 albums.

Mike Dowling spent more than a decade in Nashville playing sessions, fronting his own band, and writing songs for artists that included Del McCoury, Kathy Mattea, and Emmylou Harris. His engaging voice, self-deprecating wit, and arsenal of elegant interpretations of old blues, swing, ragtime, and original tunes captured the hearts of acoustic music fans.

Complimentary activities at the celebration include birthday treats, face painting, hula hooping, Jackson Hole Public Art’s mobile studio, the strider bike park, giveaways, and tips for healthy living. Food trucks and beverage vendors will be available, as they are for Jackson Hole Live events.

Partners for the event include Jackson Hole Public Art, Friends of Pathways, and the Jackson Hole Recycling Center.

Apres Skitastrophe???

Posted on: March 14th, 2016 by thcAdmin

Teton Village has grown quite significantly over the years, the Apres ski scene however, has left much to be desired. I have even heard term “apres-don’t”. On the weekends the lack of seating or even standing room, at times, is overwhelming enough to drive many locals out of the village and back home. I would imagine that quite a few visitors have just headed to the local liquor store, then retreated to their rooms or the hotel/condo’s pool and hot tub. There is some great food and fun to be had, you just need to get off of the hill by 2:30-3pm to score a good seat at your desired location. Many people can often be seen trolling the village looking for a place to sit and unwind after 4pm.

Weekdays during non-holiday times generally leaves folks with the ability to go where they desire. You may sometimes find that some places are virtual ghost towns during off peak periods. It is certainly an odd mix in the Village.

The Bodega can be a good call. Providing a laid back environment, with some delicious brats. There is a little space indoors, more tables and seating are available just outside. There is some great Southern exposure so you can soak in some afternoon rays.

Teton Thai is a little slice of Thai heaven. The food is amazing! Off of the beaten path a bit, they are located by the Ranch Lot, a shuttle goes back and forth most hours if you do not feel like making the walk.

King Sushi is my favorite “get out of Dodge” move. Jump on the bus or into your car and head straight to town. Get a nice deal on some drinks and sushi at one of the best places in town. If you get off of the hill before 4pm, grab a “tall boy” and soak up some rays along the Village Commons then head to town a little after 4pm. They are located just off of the town square.

The Mangy Moose Saloon is the traditional hotspot. Being written up in a number of ski magazines as the place to be. The Moose isn’t quite as wild as it used to be, but it is certainly a place to mix with the locals and “out of towners.”  There is often live music and a great take to take in some afternoon sun.

The Spur located in Teton Mountain Lodge is a local go to. The Spur gets going pretty good on the weekends. They have a great drink selection, yummy food and an inviting atmosphere.

Osteria inside of Hotel Terra can be a great place to slip into. Often overlooked, they have a quaint bar with decent

June 11, 12, 13, 14 of 2015

A new event hitting the Hole this Summer. The Contour Music Festival will occur over the second weekend in June. This will be first festival of this magnitude to be hosted in Jackson. There is an extensive line-up of musicians, covering a variety of musical genres. The event looks to be a good one, with multiple venues and a strong line up of acts.

Jeff Stein and Matt Donovan are our hosts. They have worked diligently to get Contour off of the ground. The three words they are using to describe the Contour experience are: intimate, innovative and elevated. Contour is a non-genre specific event, one that should be attractive to a wide audience. Part of that idea is having the chance to be introduced to music types that people may not have previously experienced. Designed to be an annual event, with increasing impact and benefit over the long-term, we all hope that this inaugural events goes well. It is exciting to have the community of Jackson to host an event of this caliber.

The Jackson Hole Farmers Market occurs each Saturday morning on the Town Square from July 10 to September 19 for the Summer of 2014. The market runs from 8am to 12pm. Not only are there fruits and veggies, but baked goods, canned good and more. The community and visitors to the area have embraced the Farmers Market since it kicked off in the Summer of 2000. Attendance has steadily grown each year as the Farmer’s Market has become more diversified and now offers a larger number of vendors.

Raised in a family with a large garden I was exposed to fresh produce at an early age. Flavor is the best part, local produce tends take on the characteristics of its environment. High elevation, frost resistant crops that are widely grown in the area possess a fabulous crispness and taste.

The growing trend of Farmers Markets across the country has helped to nurture awareness of healthy eating, buying locally and getting to know your neighbors. The Hole Concierge strongly endorses increased consumption of organic foods, the localization of production and its inherent benefits. Farmers Markets provide healthy locally grown and produced products which in turn assists in creating sustainability within local economies. A number of small organic farms have cropped up in the area over the last few years creating jobs and reducing commuter traffic in the area.

Featured each week is a different chef, musician or group, and a non-profit. Vendors at the market donate 10% of their gross sales to the non-profit of the week. Over the past ten plus years the market has donated over $200,000 to local non-profit organizations. There are games for the kids and other features of the market. Hope to see you down on the Square.

Shows generally wrap up around dusk, and provide a welcome social event for visitors and locals. Dogs are not allowed on the ball field. A five block walk from the town square and convenient to the S.T.A.R.T. bus, makes it easy to get back and forth from the show. This year’s new title sponsor is the Snake River Brewery.
